Mac and Me

Mac_and_me_movie_poster.jpg

Mac and Me is a 1988 family film about a disabled boy and an extraterrestrial juvenile. The decision to create it was based largely on the success of E.T. (1982). The title itself, Mac and Me, comes from the working title for E.T. — E.T. and Me.

The film is known for its numerous and blatant product placements, including Coca-Cola, Skittles, Sears and McDonald’s to name a few. The main character’s name, Mac, is a reference to McDonald’s Big Mac sandwich. The only food the aliens require are Coke and Skittles. A ten-minute-long impromptu dance number, featuring Ronald McDonald, takes place in a McDonald’s franchise which led Leonard Maltin to call the film “more like a TV commercial than a movie”.

The film has gained a measure of notoriety thanks to actor Paul Rudd. As part of a running gag during Rudd’s appearances on Late Night With Conan O’Brien, he frequently shows a clip of the wheelchair-bound Eric (Jade Calegory) flying off a cliff while Mac watches on, instead of showing clips from the actual movie Rudd is there to promote.

PEVZ

In my latest effort to fix the fact that pevz.org does rank well in searches for either “pevz” or “positive energy vibe zone,” I’ve created a series of PEVZ badges in an homage to the early days of Internet.

If you’re ever on a site or forum or anything, and you want to give me some link love, grab one of these hawtt badges. And, of course, if you want to make one of your own, by all means do.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, just being on 50ft.com means…

Tom Daschle’s Glasses

Tom Daschle Glasses

Why aren’t more people talking about these? (Wonkette calls them sexy Sally Jesse Raphael glasses) I’m thinking about getting cable, just so I get more chances to see Daschle and his glasses on C-SPAN.

Mistaken Train of Thought. Destination: Bizarre Untold American History

Jacob’s post about Ray Loewy’s bathroom got me thinking about Dieter Rams’s work for Braun, but I mistakenly thought that he’d worked for Dupont, so I started searching Google’s new archive of LIFE images for Dupont. I ended up at the image above and got my mind blown.

There’s a totally awesome story behind this image, but I don’t know what it is. I could spend all day clicking on the related images Google serves up with it (btw, Google’s UI wins again).

Important Poll

There’s some internal debate about whether we should sport a ligature in our header. That is, if we should call ourselves 50ft or 50ſt. See the difference? Personally, I’d prefer 50¢. Get it?!

Anyway, vote if you care. The poll’s in the sidebar (look to the right). I’ll keep it there for exactly one week. Tell your frienz to vote.

Hey It’s Andy Warhol Friday

Surfing the web for Warhol memorabilia is the best way to round out the week.

Also, iPhone 2.2 software just came out.

Google Hosts LIFE

c.jpeg

How about those eyebrows.

Search millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. Most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google.

Thanks to Chris for pointing this out.

I can’t wait until Google does this for the Library of Congress’s Prints and Photographs collection and the New York Public Library’s Digital Gallery.

Noah Kalina

Noah Kalina reminds us that sometimes light itself is the best possible subject of a photograph.

Other reminders:

He also has a blog.
