Here & There

_images_uptown.jpg

Here & There is a project by S&W exploring speculative projections of dense cities. These maps of Manhattan look uptown from 3rd and 7th, and downtown from 3rd and 35th. They’re intended to be seen at those same places, putting the viewer simultaneously above the city and in it where she stands, both looking down and looking forward.

Go to Schulze & Webb for more info. If you’re as thick as I am, this will take you a little while to figure out, but stick with it because it’s kind of mindblowing. Plus you can buy prints of it.

Why?

Because the ability to be in a city and to see through it is a superpower, and it’s how maps should work.

Land of Plenty’s Buenaventura Show

wallcomp.jpg.jpeg

The boards along the top were all painted by students of Fillmore Middle School in Ventura. We are raising money to turn these into completes and send them to Board Pals in Haiti!

Looks like an awesome show, happened in Ventura last week.

More info on the show and the totally awesome Land of Plenty Foundation Skateboard Foundation.

Dustin just clued me into my new favorite blog (other than this one?): But Does It Float.

The above pic is from this entry.

Consume and Win a Free Frozen Mammoth

“032209: Drano” - by Kate Bingaman-Burt

The crüe at Inside the Frozen Mammoth are giving away something (I’m not sure what—probably not a free frozen mammoth) if you tell them what you bought today and how much it cost you—so go tell them what you bought. The whole thing is inspired by the consumption-inspired illustrations of Kate Bingaman-Burt. Good job, Kate. Read the rest of this entry »

Red de Leon - Photographer, Art School Professor Guy

Dustin clued me into a very interesting discussion going on on Red de Leon’s Flickr stream. In essence (as far as I can grasp), he’s asking if we can judge photography upon things other than novelty or beauty—perhaps a photograph can simply express an opinion, or thought. The Video for “Still Here” by Girl Talk

I’m finally getting around to watching Pitchfork’s top videos of 2008.

Girl Talk is always fun to listen to, but it turns out that it’s fun to watch, too—at least in this literal visual take on one of his songs (compositions?). A nice reminder of the amazing diversity and fun of pop music.

Dusdin Does an Interview

A Spanish blogger/photographer named Ana interviewed Dusdin. They talk about analog v. digital and female subjects v. male—among other things. It’s good.

Cidade dos Homens

city_men1_lead.jpg

Cidade de Homens (City of Men) is my favorite show right now. Maybe it’s because I’m fascinated by Brazil. Maybe it’s because I lived in Rio for a few months. I don’t know, but I love it. Although some of its explorations of poverty/violence/inequality/etc feel heavy handed, the show feels very real—and very Brazilian—to me.

You can stream it on Netflix, too!

The Pretender?

“He was wearing a maroon tank top, orange-and-pink pants, blue Crocs, and a pink Boston Red Sox cap, with ‘cam’ and ‘odia’ scrawled on either side of the ‘B.’”

The New Yorker published an article about Will Oldham the other week.

Swan Lake - “Enemy Mine”

swanlake.jpg

Swan Lake has a new album coming out in March. Dustin pointed out to me that the cover art is really great. The arrangement of the people, the coffee pots, binder, and microphones make it seem like a 21st century courthouse version of A Bar at the Folies-Bergère.

I’m interested in finding out who painted it. I wasn’t particularly fond of the cover of Swan Lake’s first album, Beast Moans, but a deeper examination of the works by its painter, Shary Boyle, turned out to be very rewarding.
