Papyrus, the raspberry daiquiri of fonts

Papyrus at XKCD

It’s funny because it’s still true.

Livable Streets

Livable Streets comparison in Milwaukee

My favorite entry from the GOOD Magazine livable streets contest, which shows once again how Photoshop can make the world a better place. (The crappy “before and after” above is my own; click through for a cleaner, swooshier view.)

Lego Architecture

Lego Architecture, coming soon

You heard me. Lego. Architecture. It’s not available yet, but I hope they carry the stylish, minimalistic design aesthetic through to the retail products. Compared to the usual Lego packaging, it’s downright restful. Read the rest of this entry »

The font snob

PvP 11 May: The Font Snob

Probably the smallest image I’ll ever feature here, but this was just too familiar. You know who you are.

Humans like to stack things.

Apartment blocks

It’s normally Lee’s job to gush over The Big Picture posts, but this one literally made my mind boggle. (I don’t really know what that means, but I felt it boggling. I felt it.)

Seriously, my brain was unable to process this photo in its entirety. I was convinced it must be some tiled pattern, until I checked every single window and found no obvious duplicates. Then the architecturally-inclined portion of my brain freaked out and threatened to sue if I didn’t avert my eyes immediately.

Multicolor Bulbdial Clock

bulbdial clock by oskay on Flickr

Originally imagined by Ironic Sans, built by Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories.

What’s *really* neat about this is how the colors interplay. Where all of the LEDs hit, a white color (additive RGB) is produced. Then, as you subtract one of those three colors– as in the shadow of a single LED, the results are subtractive colors, and the hands on our clock face are in the colors cyan, magenta, and yellow. It’s just magical.

depressions are depressing

Scenes from the recession at The Big Picture

…but they can also be beautiful. The Big Picture manages once again to capture amazing moments in time and space, this time dealing with the effects of the economic downturn.

Minimalist iPod Shuffle

iPod Shuffle

I realize that “Apple makes something tiny” is old news, but it should be pointed out that they’ve finally succeeded in making a device that has no buttons. I can’t tell exactly, but it may not even have a LED indicator.

And yes, I realize that the headphones have buttons. That’s not the point. No one’s looking at those. So shut up.

When design attacks

Hello Boys

All it took was Comic Sans, a little WordArt, and a well-placed sparkle to turn this:

So yeah. “Hello Boys!”

FontSquirrel

Submitted for your consideration because of a) fonts and b) the prominent squirrel.
