Product showcase galleries

I need your help!

Okay okay so this isn’t a post about something fancy shmancy (although take a look at those goggles). No, I need your help. I figure us 50 footers have seen a thing or two on the web, so I just want some input for a larger project of mine. Product showcase galleries. You know the things on the eCommerce site’s that show you the different colors and style you can buy your product in.

Mainly focusing on apparel and accessories…
What are the things you notice before purchasing a product online? Zooming in on a product? Cropped and detailed pictures with matching thumbnail? Clothes laying flat on a surface, or on a model. Features you like, features you can’t stand. A watch on a hand or a watch floating in mid air?

Thought? Links? Any input would help me out quite a bit. Thank ya!

I hate to go with the obvious, but I kinda want it all.

I want to see the shirt/pants/shoes/watch in the context of their natural, real environment (so on a model, ideally a couple different ones at a couple different angles). I also want to see the floating close-ups so I can get a better look at it (especially for things like watches). For fabric things, I love seeing super macro closeups of the fabric, the stitching, any details, etc. If it has different states, I wanna see them (like eBags).

I don’t like flashy rotate-the-image stuff. Feels too wonky. I just want a big ol’ pile of really high-quality photos.

If there are multiple colors/styles, that’s gonna matrix out the number of photos I want to see (ideally I can see any given photo across colors).

If there’s a color drop-down or similar on the ‘add to cart’ section of the page, the color of the piece in the photo damn well better update to match :)

I hate when you can’t get large images of the product, and when there aren’t large images for ALL colorways. It’s also a bummer when the zoom button only expands the photo another 20% (I said ZOOM), and I also don’t like fancy flash-zoom-navigation stuff when the other views don’t really reveal anything a big image wouldn’t have shown me. Either on models or flat, but mannequin shots are def. my least favorite.

I’ve had good experiences with American Apparel’s wholesale site in the past.

    Agree. Agree.

You guys are awesome. This is exactly the kinda stuff what I wanna hear. Can’t thank ya enough.

Zappos does a helluva good job showcasing products — shots from every angle, in every colorway, with a closeup to show texture. I also hate those little zoomy things, that only let you narrow your focus to a tiny part of the overall canvas. Finally, I too hate it when sites have an “enlarge” feature that shows something only modestly larger than a thumbnail. I want to see everything, warts and all.
