Use a grid

Seriously. If you’re not using a grid, you better be a damn good designer.

As far as grid-figure-outers go, gridr buildrrr (pictured above) is a slick new kid to the block featuring much AJAXy goodness. I’d use this primarily to figure out a grid for a new site. It lets you set column and gutter widths which results in an overall site width.

If you have a fixed width and need to figure out columns within that, try my Grid figure-outer (on Google Docs). It lets you put in a total width and a number of columns, then returns a list of options for how wide those columns can be with different gutter sizes.

As a long-time Grid figure-outer user (and generally math-challenged person), I’m always excited about tools like this. And the stupid name just pulls me in.
