Neighborhood Signs

One of San Diego’s most visible treasures of public art are its neon neighborhood signs. Each distinct, but of a family, they capture something of the personality of each neighborhood, and are great fodder for San Diego’s community of amateur and professional photographers. Here are a selection of my favorites.

These signs always make me anxious b/c I’m SO SCARED of the day that someone tries to take them away. I love them. I’ve never seen the Mission Hills one. I love this shot of it!

The Mission Hills one doesn’t stand over the street like the others do–it’s on a building on the north side of Washington Street at Goldfinch.

It also doesn’t jump out at passers-by like in the photo.

    Yet.

Now I think I have seen it. I pass it on the bus every day. I just need to see if I can screw up my eyes when I pass it tonight to get the laser effect.

    these are awesome.

Jed’s right… worrying about their future almost makes it hard for me to enjoy them as much as I should be able to.

These are all super-beautiful. On the flip side, many of the beach communities have hatefully ugly signs, particularly Ocean Beach.
