Here & There is a project by S&W exploring speculative projections of dense cities. These maps of Manhattan look uptown from 3rd and 7th, and downtown from 3rd and 35th. They’re intended to be seen at those same places, putting the viewer simultaneously above the city and in it where she stands, both looking down and looking forward.
Go to Schulze & Webb for more info. If you’re as thick as I am, this will take you a little while to figure out, but stick with it because it’s kind of mindblowing. Plus you can buy prints of it.
Why?
Because the ability to be in a city and to see through it is a superpower, and it’s how maps should work.

It’s normally Lee’s job to gush over The Big Picture posts, but this one literally made my mind boggle. (I don’t really know what that means, but I felt it boggling. I felt it.)
Seriously, my brain was unable to process this photo in its entirety. I was convinced it must be some tiled pattern, until I checked every single window and found no obvious duplicates. Then the architecturally-inclined portion of my brain freaked out and threatened to sue if I didn’t avert my eyes immediately.
Transform any surface into a sweet dry erase drawing board.

Was gonna buy some until I saw the price tag. Yikes. Someone buy some and test it out for me. More info + promo code after the jump.
Mazda’s brand is kind of all over the place. When I think Mazda, I think either of suburban minivan drivers, Miata fans or mid-90s RX-7 racer-boys (like my annoying neighbors). But there’s some goodness to be found if you look. [More…]
The Big Picture strikes again. I hate to just repost their amazing, consistent quality. But today’s images just filled me with awe. I pained to pick just one to include here.
I highly recommend checking out the full set for some stunning patterns, close-up moonscapes, and a couple of flickering moments magically caught on film by a little satellite millions of miles from home. That these are photos and not renderings boggles the mind.
I am thinking of doing another Homework Show near the end of June. The
tentative theme is Assignment 2: “Book Report” and it will be a FREE
zine swap. Basically we hope to have everyone participating make 10-30
zines to display and switch with other people during the event, since
no one really has any money right now. Some are you are from out of
town (not in SoCal) so if you want to make some and send them we can get
you some cool ones in exchange!
Please send me an email if you’d be into participating – if you also
have any friends interested in participating let me know. They do not
necessarily have to be an artist, as long as they can make a little
book. We’re basically looking to display zines about “stuff you like
to learn about/read/do/experience”. If I forgot to email someone who
you think should be in here please forward this along.
The boards along the top were all painted by students of Fillmore Middle School in Ventura. We are raising money to turn these into completes and send them to Board Pals in Haiti!
Looks like an awesome show, happened in Ventura last week.
This’ll (hopefully) be the first of several posts to look at car logos. I thought I’d do a series of little examinations of the marks you see on cars every day, so I’m avoiding the super-exotics and stuff you can only buy in other countries.
I thought I’d start on a negative — one of my least favorite logos — Chevrolet. [More…]
Beautiful poster and wonderful old-timey site. And much credit for making a “small” version of their poster 1066×1575px and putting up a “huge” version that’s 242MB that I didn’t bother downloading.
